In 2023, I have been as busy as ever with freelance maths publishing. However, I have been diversifying into different roles, such as authoring, reviewing and training.
I have particularly enjoyed working on creating maths videos for the education company Kognity, who specialise in interactive books for international markets. These videos seek to introduce a particular broad topic in an engaging way, and sometimes rather irreverent, to make the topic more accessible and interesting from the start.
I have also enjoyed authoring calculus material for business studies undergraduate students, using graphing tools to bring calculus concepts to life.
In this calculus course for non-maths specialists, the focus is on conceptual understanding rather than procedural fluency. Care is taken in introducing the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and exploring how a function relates to its derivative and to its integral through a range of interactive activities. These concepts are then applied to aspects of business calculus, such as marginal analysis and price elasticity.
More recently I have been conducting training sessions on all aspects of creating a maths textbook, including student books and teacher guides. This has involved drawing on aspects of pedagogy, and how these can be translated into features within a textbook spread.
I also continue to work on more traditional media, and they don’t come much more traditional than an O Level Mathematics Coursebook, for which I was development editor. Lots of practice in this textbook!
